The Barretts

Taking photos for another photographer is always a bit nerve wracking - is it going to be what they expected or what they would’ve done themselves?! Are they going to be happy with the outcome?!

Emily and I have been friends for a while and we’d always talked about capturing her family at the ages they are now. It’s becoming apparent as the kids get older that everything changes so quickly and holding onto their little freckles and missing teeth is like desperately grabbing at sand as it slips away.

My style of shooting really requires an activity - there’s no better way to get those real, raw moments than by observing as everyone interacts and the natural family dynamic plays out. Emily and I chatted about what they like to do and together planned an evening that would take in the best of her family’s fun personalities while making the most of the golden light at the end of the day. We factored in a stop for hot chips to account for the kids getting hungry and over it, and made sure we had enough space to burn off the end of day energy.

Our plan was to meet at the skatepark, then walk across to grab some hot chips before heading to the beach. Doing multiple activities also helps the kids (and parents) to relax and to forget that I’m there taking photos.

I am so happy with the end result, it really captures the fun evening we spent together, and the kids different personalities and their dynamic with their parents, as well as a wee moment for Emily and Andrew too.
